MARYBOROUGH

Maryborough is the  heart of Victoria and the Goldfields, making it an ideal base for the visitor to explore our region.

Approximately a two hour drive north-west of Melbourne, Maryborough is central to Ballarat and Bendigo.

Maryborough was settled in the 1830's by pastoralists the Simson brothers but with the discovery of gold  prospectors flocked to the area in search of their fortune. Today they still come to find the elusive metal, as Maryborough is renowned for its alluvial gold.

Maryborough is not only about gold, visitors come to explore our lovely Box Ironbark forest with its wildflowers and wonderful displays of Wattle in springtime or just to relax and unwind.

Grand buildings, historic cottages and gracious homes are complemented by beautiful parks and gardens that give the visitor an insight into the rich history of the region.

The Civic Centre, known as McLandress Square, is surrounded by one of Australia's most significant clusters of public buildings.   It features the Courthouse, Post Office, Town Hall and Fire Station. The imposing structure of the Bull & Mouth Hotel in High Street is hard to miss and is a grand example of fine architecture.

The Central Goldfields Art Gallery  now housed in the former, historic fire station building has many fine displays including the Gallerys own collection..

However, no visit to Maryborough is complete without seeing the magnificent Railway Station.  Completed in 1891 it is an award winning tourist attraction housing an Antique Emporium ,Regional Wine Centre and cafe.  The building is a grand reminder of the glory years of rail.

When looking for somewhere to stay in Maryborough consider the many options, from gracious guest houses, delightful self contained cottages, well equipped motels, farm stays, caravan park or modest pub accommodation.  We cater for all requirements.

Fine foods and good quality local wines are available throughout the region.  Maryborough's fine dining establishments offer a variety of cuisine to suit all tastes.  There are also many cosy cafes, take-away's and delightful bakeries.

If sport is to your liking, tennis, golf, bowls fishing are just some of the activities on offer.  Cycling is a very popular pastime in the region or enjoy a swim all year round.

For those who like to indulge in a little 'retail therapy' Maryborough has many interesting retailers from the small to larger variety stores, pharmacies and supermarkets.

From alluvial gold to liquid gold, Maryborough is the home of honey production.  Gold is also reflected in the wattle trees in the springtime when the nearby Paddy's Ranges State park is full of yellow blossom.

Maryborough is in close proximity to many of the fascinating smaller Gold Rush towns, within a 20 km radius are the historic townships of Dunolly, Talbot, Carisbrook, Bealiba, Moliagul, Majorca and Timor each with their own wonderful character and history.

Stay another day in Maryborough and include a visit to the Pyrenees wine region only 25 minutes away.

TIMOR and BET BET
Timor (8 km north-north-west of Maryborough) is an old gold mining township which features a number of historic relics, such as the granite arch to the pump house
of the Grand Duke Mine which operated from 1869-1896.   The shafts extended 6 km underground.

The Miners Right Store (1852) is one of the state's oldest shops. Behind it is a prefabricated gaol dating from around 1890.  The primary school was opened in 1863 and the cemetery is of interest.

The mine shafts created by Chinese diggers can be found in this area.  Unlike the rectangular holes created by European miners, the Chinese dug round shafts as they believed malevolent spirits were capable of concealing themselves in corners.

North of Maryborough, on the road to Dunolly, is the ghost town of Bet Bet which contains all that remains of an old church, a couple of homesteads, the railway line and a recreation reserve.
