Stewart takes triathlon crown in Maryborough

Joel Chadwick - Wednesday, February 13, 2013

Sunday’s 2013 Vision Super Central Goldfields Reverse Triathlon produced one of the greatest races in the event’s 14 year history, with Maryborough resident Lachlan Stewart taking line honours in a time of 56:44.

Stewart produced a blistering cycle leg to break away from the Elite Men’s field and produce one of the best races of his short triathlon career. In second place was Dayne Pearce (60:09), third place Jordan Adams (60:43), and fourth place Richard Squires (60:47).

Last year’s Elite Female Category winner Sophie Hawken successfully defended her title in a time of 64:55. Second place winner Shai O’Brien raced tremendously and finished in a time of 66:30. Third place was Danae Sinclair (67:25), and fourth place Laura Butler (68:53).

There was one record broken on the day in the short course team category as well. The team comprising Joel Chadwick (run leg), Jeremy McGinnis (ride leg) and Frank Crameri (swim) smashed the record set in 2011 by over five minutes, completing the course in 27.56.

Race Director Martin Mark said, “It was great to get such an exciting race today. The fields were strong with over one hundred and thirty competitors taking to the course, a new record for the reverse format, and we nearly had as many female competitors as male this year.

“Competitors came from Melbourne, Echuca, Castlemaine, Ballarat, Bendigo, Ararat, Warrnambol and Benalla, and there was a large contingent of local triathletes as well”, Martin concluded.

For the second year running the Maryborough Sports and Leisure Centre (MSLC) was awarded the Capilano Community Club Cup. It recorded the highest number of entries from any collective group with employees and members of the centre competing in the event. The MSLC will put the cash prize towards its disability fund to install a new lift into the aquatics area.

Race organisers would like to thank all individuals and groups who assisted with the preparations, conducting, and packing up for the event, and also those residents who abut the track for their cooperation on the day. The race was both safe and enjoyable for all competitors, and this is due in large to the support shown from all these groups and individuals.
