Two Exhibitions on Display

Joel Chadwick - Wednesday, April 17, 2013

The Central Goldfields Art Gallery in Maryborough is currently hosting two photographic exhibitions.

Melbourne artist Peter Lambropoulos brings to Maryborough his exhibition titled Noise Noise Everywhere, comprising images that reveal to the viewer the infinite possibilities of imagined, manufactured and constructed worlds.

“From Daguerreotypes through to Photoshop, the history of photography has been filled with fraudsters, tricksters and illusionists and it is well within this tradition that I position myself as a photographer,” says Peter.

“The spaces and places I photograph are the product of an ongoing experimental sculptural practice; one that explores the aesthetic potential of everyday materials. What is intriguing about these images is that they occupy two spaces simultaneously — they are real and yet they are fakes.”

Complementing Peter’s exhibition is the work of Bendigo artist Carolyn Dew, with a collection of images titled Sacred Groves. Carolyn says she uses photography to contemplate on the material world that surrounds her.

“The material culture of our everyday life reflects our collective and personal attempts to interpret and make sense of the world we live in. A full expression of the anxiety, joy and ridiculousness of being human is articulated in the material environments we construct and inhabit.”

The exhibitions will open on Saturday, 13 April at 2pm and will be on display at the gallery until Sunday, 26 May 2013. The Central Goldfields Art Gallery is located in Neill Street, Maryborough, and is open from 10am to 4pm, Thursday to Sunday. Entry is free.

One of a kind quilting exhibition to launch 2013 Gallery program

Joel Chadwick - Monday, February 18, 2013

The Central Goldfields Art Gallery in Maryborough will commence its 2013 program this month with Golden Textures - a contemporary art quilt exhibition that has been purposely designed for this event.

The exhibition comprises 35 new works created by sixteen different artists. Each piece has been specially designed for this exhibition to suit the gallery space, and interest the central Victorian audience with colour texture and vision.

International award winner and local quilter Jenny Bacon, is the curator of the exhibition.

“Works have come from all over Australia, including many from Central Victoria,” said Jenny. One artists, Alison Schwabe, is an Australian currently living in Uruguay. Some artists are well known internationally, while others are new and emerging artists with different visions to share.

“The methods used in these quilts are very diverse; from the piecing, appliqué and quilting stitch used in traditional quilts, to using new materials, paint, dye and digital images.

“The art quilt movement is now more than 40 years old and these artists demonstrate the most contemporary work in the Australian scene,” Jenny said.

This exhibition will be the first of a biennial contemporary art quilt exhibition at the Central Goldfields Art Gallery. Central Goldfields Shire Council has donated $2000 for an acquisitive prize. The gallery plans to collect contemporary art quilts from these exhibitions.

Shire Mayor, Cr Barry Rinaldi, will officially open the exhibition on Saturday, 23 February at 2pm, where he will announce the prize winner. All are welcome to attend.

Friends of the Gallery is hosting an Artist’s Talk exhibition curator Jenny Bacon on Friday, March 15 at 2pm. All are welcome and the cost is $5.00 per person and includes afternoon tea.

The Central Goldfields Art Gallery is located in Neill Street, Maryborough and is open Thursday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm. Entry is free.

For further information about Golden Textures, the Artist’s Talk, or other exhibitions planned for 2013, contact Kay Parkin at the gallery on 5460 4588.

Drawing on images from various photographic collections at the Public Record Office Victoria, it showcases the work that Victorians have done to contribute to the community and economy of our state.
