Central Goldfields Art Gallery is a cultural facility of Central Goldfields Shire Council.

The art gallery is situated in the picturesque historic fire station built in 1861, a short walk from the CBD.

The gallery presents a varied exhibition program which showcases local and regional artists, and includes touring exhibitions.

A selection from the permanent collection is exhibited in the Casey Room. This growing collection includes works by artists of regional and national significance, such as Arthur Boyd, Pro Hart, Dean Bowen and Ray Crooke.

Textile art from the biennial Golden Textures acquisitive exhibition, compliments the work from the existing collection. Community engagement is supported with an annual community art and craft exhibition and local schools’ VCE art and design.

VCE Art and Design Exhibition

Current Exhibition

Golden Textures is a biennial contemporary art quilt exhibition held at Central Goldfields Art Gallery in Maryborough from 18 February to 26 March this year.

Curated by local and international award-winning textile artist, Jenny Bacon, an acquisitive prize of $3,000 is on offer.  The prize-winning quilt then becomes part of the Central Goldfields Art Gallery permanent collection.  Artists have been juried from Expressions of Interest, with 23 of the highest standard contemporary art quilters selected from across Australia.

Exhibition curator Jenny Bacon was invited to travel the Gallery’s 2015 Golden Textures exhibition to two prestigious international exhibitions. First to Birmingham, England and later to Beaujolais, France.

Birmingham Festival of Quilts is the largest show of its type in Europe attracting 60,000 visitors.  Beaujolais International Textile Art Exhibition draws 24,000 visitors over four days. The Golden Textures quilts hung alongside works from Belgium, Mexico, Russia, Taiwan and America, among others.

The standard of the 2017 Golden Textures exhibition is no different with Jenny Bacon commenting: ‘Many have chosen subjects that relate to Australia’s landforms, landscape and geological history. Some have chosen to depict our unique flora and fauna, thus continuing this interest of Australian women artists which has continued since Colonial times. Interestingly, this year several have chosen the theory of waves and flow as their inspiration.  As usual the use of colour is exceptional, and some are daring to come off the wall, making three dimensional pieces. It promises to be an exciting exhibition.’

The exhibition will also feature a quilt by textile artist Barbara Macey (one of the earliest Australian contemporary quilters) from the Victorian Craft Collection on loan from Ararat Regional Art Gallery.

2017 exhibition dates are 18 February – 26 March.

Opening hours are Thursday to Sunday 10am to 4pm.
