Central Goldfields Art Gallery is a cultural facility of Central Goldfields Shire Council.

The art gallery is situated in the picturesque historic fire station built in 1861, a short walk from the CBD.

The gallery presents a varied exhibition program which showcases local and regional artists, and includes touring exhibitions.

A selection from the permanent collection is exhibited in the Casey Room. This growing collection includes works by artists of regional and national significance, such as Arthur Boyd, Pro Hart, Dean Bowen and Ray Crooke.

Textile art from the biennial Golden Textures acquisitive exhibition, compliments the work from the existing collection. Community engagement is supported with an annual community art and craft exhibition and local schools’ VCE art and design.

If you would like to receive an invitation to the gallery’s exhibitions, via email, please contact us. For further information on current exhibitions or to download a copy of our yearly program of exhibitions, see below.

Admission to the gallery is free and a donation is gratefully accepted.

Opening hours are Thursday to Sunday 10am to 4pm.

Tour groups welcome all week, but bookings are essential

Current Exhibition

The Shrine of Remembrance travelling exhibition Australia will be there: Victorians in the First World War (1914-19) will open at Central Goldfields Art Gallery in Maryborough on Saturday 8 April 2017.

The Shrine’s curator Jean McAuslan (Director of access and Learning Shrine of Remembrance) will hold a floor talk at 1.00pm with the official opening at 2.00pm.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

The exhibition features over 100 photographs drawn from major collections, including the Australian War Memorial and the State Library of Victoria.  Audio visual displays and touch screens, plus artefacts from our local soldiers are also part of the exhibition, giving visitors a tangible link to the soldiers of our district. The exhibition is in Maryborough over the Anzac Day period - with the gallery open after noon on Anzac Day – and concludes on 21 May.

To compliment the exhibition The Shrine of Remembrance Regional Lecture Series travels to Maryborough.  A free public program will be held at Maryborough Town Hall on Thursday 20 April 2017 at 2.00pm.  Dr Joan Beaumont, a Professor at ANU Canberra and winner of the 2014 Prime Minister’s Literary Award for Australian History for her book Broken Nation, is making a special trip to Maryborough to talk about the conscription debate that divided the nation during the First World War.  Bookings for this event are essential.  Via Central Goldfields Art Gallery – details below – or via the Shrine of Remembrance website shrine.org.au/bookings or call 9661 8100.
