Central Goldfields Art Gallery is a cultural facility of Central Goldfields Shire Council.

The art gallery is situated in the picturesque historic fire station built in 1861, a short walk from the CBD.

The gallery presents a varied exhibition program which showcases local and regional artists, and includes touring exhibitions.

A selection from the permanent collection is exhibited in the Casey Room. This growing collection includes works by artists of regional and national significance, such as Arthur Boyd, Pro Hart, Dean Bowen and Ray Crooke.

Textile art from the biennial Golden Textures acquisitive exhibition, compliments the work from the existing collection. Community engagement is supported with an annual community art and craft exhibition and local schools’ VCE art and design.

If you would like to receive an invitation to the gallery’s exhibitions, via email, please contact us. For further information on current exhibitions or to download a copy of our yearly program of exhibitions, see below.

Admission to the gallery is free and a donation is gratefully accepted.

Opening hours are Thursday to Sunday 10am to 4pm.

Tour groups welcome all week, but bookings are essential

VCE Art and Design Exhibition

Current Exhibition

Author and illustrator Renee Treml brings the suspects and the clues to life in this exhibition focusing on children’s book The Great Garden Mystery (published by Random House Australia 2014).

The Great Garden Mystery exhibition was developed with the assistance of the Central Goldfields Art Gallery. This show marks the first time Renee’s children’s picture books have been transformed into exhibition format. It features three dimensional elements, lifting the characters off the pages into life size scale.

Renee’s writing and drawing is largely influenced by her years studying ecology and working in the natural sciences. She moved to Australia in 2007 from the United States and has since chosen to celebrate the amazing diversity of animals that inhabit this country through her words and pictures.

Using a digital technique that recreates traditional scratchboard, Renee is able to create detailed yet organic-looking black-and-white illustrations which she overlays on bright coloured backgrounds. Creating the artworks digitally enables Renee to lessen the environmental footprint while still maintaining the uniqueness and personality of her style. The Great Garden Mystery was short-listed for the 2015 Speech Pathology Book of the Year Award.

Entry to the gallery is free, however a donation is gratefully accepted.  Exhibition dates: 29 July to 4 September 2016.  Gallery hours 10am to 4pm.  Old Fire Station Neill Street, Maryborough
